A scientific study has proven the benefits of carrots against cancer and that taking vitamin A in them reduces the risk of skin cancer.
Carrots, broccoli, bell peppers, cherries, or grapefruit are some of the best foods that are high in Vitamin A.
Researchers at Brown University in Providence have now discovered that these foods are well suited to protect against skin cancer.
The study was recently published in the journal “JAMA Dermatology”.
According to researchers, the risk of developing skin cancer can be reduced by 17 percent.
Appropriate food against skin cancer :
Cutaneous cell carcinoma is the second most common form of skin cancer in people with fair skin.
Although vitamin A is known to promote healthy skin, it has not yet been possible to demonstrate any specific efficacy in reducing the risk of skin cancer.
The current study by Brown University now paints a clearer picture. “Our study is another reason to eat a lot of fruits and vegetables as part of a healthy diet,” confirms research director Eunyoung Cho.
“Skin cancer, including squamous cell carcinoma, is difficult to prevent, but this study indicates that a healthy diet rich in vitamin A may be a way to reduce risks,” says a professor of dermatology.
But other protection mechanisms against solar radiation should not be reduced.
Benefits of carrots against cancer
Chu’s research team examined data from 121,700 women and 5,1529 men from 1984 to 2012.
All participants were required to provide regular detailed reports on their diet.
123,000 participants had a mild skin type and an increased risk of melanoma but did not show any signs at the start of the study.
During the study period, 3978 cancer cases were diagnosed among the participants.
Based on the nutritional data, the participants were divided into five groups, depending on how much vitamin A they consumed.
The results showed that the group that consumed the most carrots was 17 percent less likely to be affected, compared to the group that consumed the least amount.
According to the researchers, it is sufficient to eat two large carrots per day to reach this amount.
The best vitamin A from the plant source
Researcher Chu believes that vitamin A from vegetables and fruits is more appropriate than animal sources and nutritional supplements.
According to Chu, the risk of nausea, liver damage, osteoporosis, and hip fractures is due to vitamins from animal sources or nutritional supplements.
“On the contrary, the risk of side effects due to the high content of plant vitamin A is minimal,” says the professor.
Clinical trial prove the effect
In addition, the same effect is found in similar vitamin A substances.
Lycopene, which is increasingly found in tomatoes and melons, has a similar protective effect against skin cancer.
However, since the study is an observational study, the causes and implications of these relationships have not been explored.
It might be theorized that other factors played a role as well.
So Chu’s team now wants to conduct a clinical trial to further research the protective effects of vitamin A.
